Bring Your Own: the challenges and the advantages

Bring Your Own brings challenges, but definitely also advantages! Let’s write down the most important advantages.

1. Increase of mobility – independent of place and time
Several American and English studies have shown that Bring Your Own has a positive influence on the mobility and productivity of users. The reasons are twofold. Firstly, it gives the user the possibility to also work on non-business locations and outside office hours. This makes traveling no longer a waste of time. Secondly, users appreciate the sense of flexibility, making them more efficient with their time.

2. Increase of productivity – own choice in applied tooling
In line with this, the employer benefits indisputably of the significant increase in productivity that arises when employees can choose their own personal ‘productivity tools’; companies experience a growth in loyalty when employees can use their own equipment at the office. The choice of tools also enhances the possibilities to work with third parties outside the organization; the tools offered by the company are usually aimed at corporation with direct colleagues.

3. Cost reduction
While this may not be the most important driver, there is an important cost advantage. The employer doesn’t have to invest every three years in buying hundreds or thousands of new laptops. These are significant investments with an impact at the CAPEX and cash flow. Organizations with an active BYO-policy don’t have this pressure on their balance anymore, including all benefits in terms of depreciation. The cost savings also varies to the extent the employer is willing to contribute to the costs of purchase and support.

4. Stay up-to-date
Consumers used to stay behind compared to the IT possibilities offered by their companies. But this has changed now. The speed of consumers upgrading their devices is almost impossible to maintain for companies. By giving users the possibility to choose their own device, organizations can easier stay up-to-date with the current technological changes.

5. Win-win situation
An organization can mark a few devices as acceptable and give users the possibility to choose from this list. In this way, a company can possibly negotiate discounts for its users with the manufacturers of these devices. On the other hand, support can be given on these devices.
